THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY THAT WASN'T: HOW JESS AND KANE PULLED OFF THE ULTIMATE SURPRISE WEDDING
Let me tell you a story about a couple who took one look at the traditional wedding playbook and said, "Nah, not for us." Jess and Kane are in their early twenties, and like most of us starting out in life, the idea of a lavish wedding with all the bells and whistles sounds like a dream, right? Instagram and Facebook have us scrolling through photos of fancy venues, over-the-top cakes, and the kind of wedding dresses that cost more than a small car. And hey, it’s easy to get caught up in all that, especially when your family or friends start chiming in, offering to chip in but with strings attached.
But Jess and Kane? They stuck to their guns. They knew they didn’t have the cash for a giant wedding, and even if they did, they weren't about to blow it all on one day. They’re just starting out in their careers, they haven’t bought their first house yet, and they knew what really mattered—that they were going to walk away as husband and wife. Not the show, not the spectacle. Just the two of them, making it official in front of the people they love most.
So what did they do? They threw an "engagement party." Only it wasn’t an engagement party—it was their bloody wedding! No expensive venue, no caterers, no stretch limos. Just their nearest and dearest, a killer surprise, and a whole lot of love. As their Central Coast marriage celebrant, I couldn’t have been prouder to be part of such a raw and real moment.
They booked the balcony at Terrigal Hotel—and get this, it was free as long as they spent a minimum of $2000 on food and drinks. No fancy hire fees, no bullshit. That $2000 was going towards feeding their guests and keeping the drinks flowing. Brilliant, right?
Now, just because they kept it simple doesn’t mean they skipped the important stuff. They still had Kayla from KB Photography snapping away. And here’s the genius part—Jess and Kane did their photos before the ceremony. They hit Terrigal Beach in the middle of winter (talk about brave), and the photos? Oh my God, they were stunning. You’d think it was just the two of them on that beach, even though there were people everywhere. Kayla is an absolute gun—no one else even made it into the shots. And because they did the photos before the ceremony, they didn’t have to leave the party once the real fun began. I can’t tell you how smart that is. No chasing the sunset, no stressing about missing out on time with your guests.
But here’s where it gets fun. Obviously, I couldn’t just show up with my PA system and blow the surprise, right? So, I came up with a plan—I’d pretend to be the musician. I’m no stranger to nerves before a ceremony, but pretending to be someone else entirely? Yeah, that was next level. I showed up with an empty guitar case, set up my PA system like I was about to belt out a few tunes, and waited for the magic to unfold. Jess and Kane knew exactly how it was going to go down, but Jess still played along like we’d never met before.
I got up there, pretending to be the "musician," and asked the crowd if they had any song requests. Crickets. Not that I was surprised—most of them were deep in conversation, probably thinking, "Who’s this chick with the guitar?" And then, I dropped the bombshell.
“Hi, my name is Lauren, and I’m a civil marriage celebrant.”
Cue confusion. I could hear the whispers, "What? What did she just say?" And then I followed up, “You heard right. I’m here to marry Jess and Kane.”
Oh man, the looks on their faces! The shock, the smiles, the tears—it was pure gold. Kayla captured it all. Then Jess did another sneaky move and asked her dad to walk her down the aisle. Two surprises in five minutes. I gave everyone a moment to let it all sink in, told them to grab a drink and gather ‘round. And that’s when Kane got emotional—right before it was time to get married. I love that. It shows just how much this meant to him.
The ceremony was simple, raw, and full of heart. The winter weather, which could have gone sideways, turned out to be perfect. The sunset was something straight out of a postcard, and the vibe was on point. No rushing off for photos, no stress, just Jess and Kane soaking up every minute with their favourite people.
For a young couple like Jess and Kane, starting out in life, keeping things real and low-key was the best decision they could’ve made. No pressure, no drama, just love. If you’re thinking about going down a similar path, I can’t recommend it enough. You don’t need all the frills and extravagance to make your day special—you just need the people you love, a bit of clever planning, and maybe a sneaky surprise or two.
Jess and Kane’s wedding wasn’t just a celebration—it was a reminder that the best weddings are the ones where the love shines through, not the price tag. As their Central Coast marriage celebrant, I can honestly say this was one of those days I’ll never forget.
